Welcome to the South Atlantic Philosophy of Education Society (SAPES) website. SAPES was founded over half a century ago in order to:

• promote the fundamental philosophical study of education.
  

• promote the philosophical treatment of the problems and issues of education through the opportunities afforded by annual meetings. 
  

• advance and improve teaching and scholarship in the philosophy of education in schools for the education of teachers and other educators 
  

• cultivate fruitful working relationships in philosophy of education among educators, educational philosophers, and philosophers in general 
  

• encourage promising students in the field of philosophy of education.

55th Annual Conference of the South Atlantic Philosophy of Education Society

University of North Carolina at Greensboro -- Friday and Saturday, October 1-2, 2010

Today, SAPES consists  of scholars from various disciplinary backgrounds who meet annually to  discuss issues related to the philosophy of education and other foundational concerns. 

Included are philosophers, historians, sociologists and anthropologists of education as well as others whose work illuminates the relationship between schools and wider society.   

Past meetings were devoted to such topics as Politics and the Future of Academic Freedom, Building Bridges, Education and the Market Ideology  and War, Terror, Violence and the Responsibility of Educators.
